Starting in 2010, Friendswood Development Company has expanded its highly popular Open House weekend event from Fairfield to Graystone Hills and Oakhurst at Kingwood. Now, residents, Realtors and home shoppers have even more opportunities to tour new and resale homes and find out why so many people are making these outstanding Friendswood Development Company communities their home.

For years, the highly successful Open House weekend event has taken place in master-planned Fairfield and due to the strong demand and response from home shoppers and Realtors, the event will now be a monthly occurrence in Graystone Hills, Conroe’s only mater-planned community, and Oakhurst at Kingwood, offering direct access to US 59.

“Realtors love this event because it gives them so much support for their listings,” said Christine Draughn, marketing director for Friendswood Development Company’s north Houston communities. “Often, residents who live in the community are selling their home because they either need more space or are ready for less space. It’s very well received by residents as well as those visiting the community.”

The Open House weekend events are scheduled on the third Sunday of each month. Visitors can tour new decorated model homes by top Houston builders, available inventory homes and resale homes.  New homes are open on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. Resale homes are open on Sunday from 1-5 p.m.

Fairfield, Graystone Hills and Oakhurst at Kingwood offer an impressive selection of homes that range from luxury courtyard and patio homes to elegant custom homes.

In early September we shared the story of Captain Daniel Moran of the U.S. Marine Corps, who had been wounded while on duty by valiantly trying to help his team. Moran received a Purple Heart for his courage and commitment, and upon returning home to Cypress he also received a brand new 3,300 sq. ft. home built by Helping A Hero, and complete with special accommodations for Moran’s physical condition. When Moran received the keys to his house he was welcomed by hundreds of Boy Scouts and military personnel welcoming home to Cypress.

Then, three months later Moran was again honored with a big surprise for Veteran’s Day. Local Boy Scouts from the Sam Houston area Council came to Moran’s house on November 10, the 234th Anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Marine Corps, to honor Moran by landscaping his yard. Moran has been a long time supporter of the Boy Scouts and is himself ranked as a Life Scout. To show their honor and respect of the fellow scout member the Boy Scouts brought a variety of plants and shrubs and transformed Moran’s patio and yard into a greener haven. Moran is still glad to be home, where he can enjoy his family from the comfort of his true home – Cypress.

Only three years old, the Cypress Woods High School is already pushing forward toward victory and making school history. In just their second varsity season they made it to the state quarterfinals for the first time.

But it's not just about a good show, this team has the real school spirit and team work that will take them places. This season it took them to Temple City where they defeated Dallas Skyline, the team that eliminated them from last year's playoffs, 228-21. And recently their hard work took them to the Berry Center where they played Round Rock Stony Point.

In just three years the Wildcats already have a committed following of fans that travel with them to show their spirit and support. And one special group of stand leaders - The Wild Things - dress up for each game, standing on the field and rooting for their team, encouraging other fans to do the same. As Cy-Woods Senior Layton McCown shared, "The best thing about our fans is that we always pack the house. We're always on our feet, loud, spirited, always yelling '-Dub'. We've got our own chants. We're the best fans out there." And their biggest fan is none other than their own school principal, Sue McGown, "This has been an amazing journey," she said. "These kids have no fear. Even the cold doesn't keep them away. Once they commit, they commit, and it's been that way since our opening."

Winter Weather Driving Safety Tips

As temperatures drop and bring on the season’s first snowfall, the Harris County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (OHSEM) wants to encourage drivers to take extra precaution and continue making the area a safe place to live for all area residents.

When temperatures reach 32-degrees or slightly higher, roads and highways can become dangerous, with a thin layer of water becoming slick ice. Here are some tips Cypress residents can take to stay safe during this winter season.

Since the distance needed to stop under slick conditions is much greater than normal be sure to keep a good distance between your car and vehicles in front of you. Also, remember to travel, steer and brake more slowly than usual. Leave yourself plenty of room to stop.

Keep your eye out for danger zones, and be aware of where other vehicles are at all times. These include intersections, curves, and bridges which can be covered in ice or patches of ice and slick spots. You can take precaution by reducing your speed, and looking for other cars and pedestrians when going through an intersection.

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD was recently recognized by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for its hard work and commitment to preventing school dropout and recovery in the dropout rates. It was listed as one of 16 Texas school districts in the TEA Annual Best Practices Clearinghouse.

CFISD’s overall Best Practices rating has been consistently above state average for the past four years. The most current data, from 2006-2007, shows the district’s completion rate without GED (the standard accountability indicator) of 96%, compared to the state average of 87%. The district’s completion rate without GED for at-risk students was 93%, compared to an average of 79%.

The Best Practices identification is based on a research-based framework that identifies campuses that have 1) identified areas for improvement; 2) researched and implemented an intervention; and 3) analyzed pre-post and trend data to evaluate and document the intervention’s effectiveness. These Best Practices evaluate instruction, dropout prevention and recovery, college and career readiness, English language learners and business/management, and these measures are obtained yearly from public schools, districts, and charter schools across Texas.
