Imagine a show that is so fun, yet full of talent, that it is enjoyed by people in their late 60’s all the way down to people in the single digits. It might be hard to imagine a show that would delight every generation, but that is just what kind of show is coming to The Centrum on February 20th.

The name of the infamous performers? Trout Fishing in America.

The name may stir recollections of the Richard Brautigan novel, but this is a duo who uses their musical talent to delight audiences of all ages. The duo, which originated in Houston, is comprised of Keith Grimwood and Ezra Idlet, standing side by side on bass and guitar respectively, with about 15 and a half inches of room between them vertically. This unlikely pair has been performing together since 1979.

Lone Star College Cy-Fair started the year on a positive note as two students and business owners earned the college's first Student Entrepreneurship Awards. Winners Toni Scott Grant and runner-up Heather Diaz have displayed a passion for their businesses and confidence in the enhancement their education will offer their paths in the future.

Grant owns Scott Phree Boutique, a youth-driven business that carries clothing and accessories marketed for ages 18 to 45. The business reflects today’s online-oriented market, as she started it completely online and now has a storefront boutique in Montrose. The ambitious owner has plans for additional locations in the future, including in Brooklyn.

Every Cypress resident is an integral part of the community and The Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) wants to help educate residents and increase public participation by creating an awareness of a variety of aspects of law enforcement. To do this Harris County invites area residents to join the Citizens Police Academy (CPA).

The Citizens Police Academy begins January 28 and meets weekly for 13 weeks, providing interactive courses through which participants learn about the Texas Penal code, Patrol Procedures, Gang Awareness, Terrorism and many other topics that law enforcement face each day. They will get an inside look at police procedures and protocols, receiving firsthand information on the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, how it runs and why deputies make the decisions they make each day on the job.

Teachers across Texas were given the opportunity to apply for Classroom Innovation Grants from First Choice Power, a subsidiary of PNM Resources and one of Texas’ largest retail electric providers. These key grants in education were awarded to full-time teachers in pre-K and K-12 whose applications showed an innovative and creative approach to teaching energy awareness and energy efficiency in their classroom. The goal was to create projects that would “stimulate and inspire young minds” and teacher’s applications had to include a project description, objectives, budget and evaluations that showed how they would accomplish this.

“Teachers positively impact their students every year,” said Brian Hayduk, president of First Choice Power. “Energy is a growing issue, and today’s students are the key to its future. Classroom Energy Innovation Grants are one way we are doing our part to help support innovative learning.”
