Cypress-Fairbanks I.S.D. is honored to have received excellent volunteer services and donations from Dr. Thomas DeBauche, cardiologist at Cypress Cardiology PA. DeBauche performed routine physicals for Cy-Fair I.S.D. athletes and ended up saving lives when he decided to address a strong need for cardiac screening.
DeBauche donated 10 electrocardiogram machines and trained school staff to provide free EKGs to over 2,000 athletes, among which some were found to be in need of immediate medical care.
DeBauche currently performs all EKG readings himself and then forwards the information along to the schools, who inform students. Of the 2,057 athletes who received an EKG, 186 were found to have abnormal results, with all but 13 receiving follow-up echocardiograms.

One Cypress pre-teen celebrated her 12th birthday this September, but not the way you might think. She didn’t ask for a long list of presents from her 35 birthday party guests. Isabel Mayne was celebrating life, but not just her own. Instead she found a way to raise money and awareness for people with A-T (Ataxia-telangiectasia), a progressive and degenerative disease with no known cure.
She wanted to give back and celebrate in a way that reached out to others in need. She hand decorated more than 40 invitations and included a request that her guests make a donation to A-T in place of a gift for Isabel. This selfless pre-teen even created a scavenger hunt in which guests had to find something for each letter of ataxia-telangiectasia.
Isabel first learned of A-t this summer on a mission trip where she had the opportunity to befriend Emily, a girl from her church that suffers from A-T. Emily is a ninth grader at Cy-Creek High School and was diagnosed with A-T at age four. Unfortunately most people with A-T die from respiratory failure or cancer by their teens or early twenties, but a rare few live into their forties. So for this birthday, Isabel was giving to those who might not have as many years as she will have on this earth, in hopes to help them as much as she can.
Isabel was able to raise $910 at her party alone, and hopes to collect $1000 before presenting the gift to the A-T Children’s project. “I would certainly do it again,” Isabel said, “It makes me feel better because I know I am helping someone else instead of doing something for myself.” Her mother is proud too, “I know she really wanted a laptop. It means a lot to see a girl at this age give up so much. I am really proud of her.”

Fairfield residents have an opportunity to take advantage of a health screening on Saturday, November 14th at Bradford Creek Clubhouse, 16011 Fairfield Green Circle.
Most screenings at offices or at the hospital can cost patients up to $2,000, but "HealthYes" is offering screenings for only $169.95 - the Total Health Screening Package (mention code BD1TX111409). This is real heart attack and stroke prevention right in your own backyard!
"The Silent Killers" are diseases like stroke, heart disease, and osteoporosis in which patients don't feel symptoms leading up to the disease or to the outcome of the disease. If not detected, these can show up suddenly and when they do it can be devastating and life threatening. While this may leave some uneasy, these "silent killers" can be detected and prevented with non-invasive and painless screenings that can save your life.
"HealthYes" mobile medical teams provide ultrasound screenings to check for six life-threatening diseases, also checking cholesterol, blood pressure and carotid arteries among other factors. These pain free procedures give back useful data that doctors can analyze to determine not just whether a patient is in the 'normal' or 'abnormal' range, but also your actual risk for these diseases.

Cypress Fairbanks Urgent Care Center is the perfect place for Fairfield residents that need immediate, non-emergency medical attention. The Urgent Care Center is located at 9110 Barker Cypress Road, and they have extended their hours on Saturday and Sunday and now open at 9am instead of 12pm. This provides an additional 3 hours of care both days for you and your family to receive the care you need by experienced physicians.
The Center offers a laboratory and diagnostic x-rays, and all of the physicians are on the medical staff at Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital, so you can rest assured you will receive quality care for your family. Treatable conditions at the Urgent Care Center include (but are not limited to) abdominal pain, allergies and allergic reactions, simple burns, sinus infections, sprains, broken bones, and pneumonia. You can visit CyFairHospital.com/UrgentCare for more information, or call 281-517-9900.
The center is advantageous as you can be seen by a doctor after normal business hours, and you can be treated more quickly than a visit to the ER. No appointment is necessary and patients are treated on a first come, first serve basis and are seen as quickly as possible. Most health plans, cash, personal check, Visa and MasterCard are accepted.
Don’t be discouraged if you check their site or call their online number which still lists their hours as 12pm-9pm Mon-Sun. We have called and verified that their new hours are indeed 12pm-9pm Mon-Fri, and 9am-9pm Sat and Sun, providing even more quality care to the Cy-Fair area as of September 5, 2009.

Texas kids are getting ready to go back to schools, and for many children, preparation includes getting a few more immunizations. This year, big changes have been made in immunization requirements which will impact incoming kindergarten and seventh grade students.
The changes to the requirements were made to bring Texas into line more closely with what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Advisory committee on Immunization Practices recommend. These changes started on August 01 and include:
- Hepatitis A Vaccine: All students entering kindergarten will be required to have two doses of Hepatitis A vaccine.
- Measles, Mumps, Rubelle (MMR) Vaccine: All students entering kindergarten will be required to have two doses of the MMR vaccine.
- Varicella (chickenpox) Vaccine: All students entering kindergarten and 7th grade will be required to have two doses of the Varicella vaccine. However, a written statement from the parent/guardian, school nurse or physician attesting to the child already having had chickenpox may replace the vaccine.
- Tetanus, Diptheria and acellular pertussis-containing Vaccine (Tdap): All students entering 7th grade will be required to have one dose of Tdap vaccine. Students in the 7th grade are required to have a booster shot of Tdap only if it has been five years since their last dose. Students in grades 8-12 are required to have a booster shot of Tdap if it has been ten years or more since their previous dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine.
- Meningococcal Vaccine: All students entering 7th grade will be required to have one dose of meningococcal vaccine.
