The CFISD Trustee Election will once again be held in conjunction with Harris County on Tuesday Nov 3. AS registered voters line up at the polls to vote in the Harris County General Election, Cy-Fair residents will have the opportunity to cast a vote to fill Positions 3 and 4 on the CFISD Board of trustees.

During the august Board meeting, the Board approved and Election Order calling for a Nov.3 election for Trustee Position 3 and 4, which are currently held by Lou Bertoli and Lida Woodul, respectively.

Six candidates have filed for the two trustee seats. Incumbent Lou Bertoli of Fairfiled drew two opponents as he seeks to be re-elected to the Position 3 seat he has held since 1996. Wallace Sofka of settlers Village and Willaim R. Morris of Ferndale are opposing Bertoli in the race for position 3. Both opponents are first-time candidates seeking a three-year terms a CFISD trustee.

Cy-Fair Urgent Care Center Extends Hours

Cypress Fairbanks Urgent Care Center is the perfect place for Fairfield residents that need immediate, non-emergency medical attention. The Urgent Care Center is located at 9110 Barker Cypress Road, and they have extended their hours on Saturday and Sunday and now open at 9am instead of 12pm. This provides an additional 3 hours of care both days for you and your family to receive the care you need by experienced physicians.

The Center offers a laboratory and diagnostic x-rays, and all of the physicians are on the medical staff at Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital, so you can rest assured you will receive quality care for your family. Treatable conditions at the Urgent Care Center include (but are not limited to) abdominal pain, allergies and allergic reactions, simple burns, sinus infections, sprains, broken bones, and pneumonia. You can visit CyFairHospital.com/UrgentCare for more information, or call 281-517-9900.

The center is advantageous as you can be seen by a doctor after normal business hours, and you can be treated more quickly than a visit to the ER. No appointment is necessary and patients are treated on a first come, first serve basis and are seen as quickly as possible. Most health plans, cash, personal check, Visa and MasterCard are accepted.

Don’t be discouraged if you check their site or call their online number which still lists their hours as 12pm-9pm Mon-Sun. We have called and verified that their new hours are indeed 12pm-9pm Mon-Fri, and 9am-9pm Sat and Sun, providing even more quality care to the Cy-Fair area as of September 5, 2009.

CROWNS Production by Lone Star College

On September 16th, LIFE Workshops, an hour-long class provided by Lone Star College every Wednesday will be featuring the subject of the musical, "Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats." This musical play will be shown at Cy-Fair College from Ocober 8th through the 18th. About the show:

CROWNS, a stand-up-and-testify musical based on the book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry, focuses on Yolanda, a young Brooklyn girl who is sent down South to stay with her grandmother. As Yolanda encounters her grandmother and her grandmother's friends in the rituals of preparing for and going to Sunday church service, she begins to discover connections to older traditions and a deeper spirituality. CROWNS is a soul-stirring tribute to the unique cultural phenomenon that fuses faith with fashion by celebrating African-American women and their church hats.

Look for the Fairfield ad in the CROWNS program!

LIFE Workshops take place Wednesdays 10 - 11 a.m.

Cypress Welcomes a Hero Home

August 31st, 2009 marked not only the end of August and the beginning of a new month, but also the day that Cypress residents proudly welcomed U.S. Marine Captain Daniel Moran (Ret.) into a brand new home. While this is a common occurrence for many, this was a special day for the Moran family.

Moran joined the Marines in 2004 and on his second tour of duty in Ramadi Iraq, his platoon was ambushed killing three of his fellow Marines. Moran survived, but not without sustaining a mild traumatic brain injury and minor inhalation injury among other injuries. After two and a half years in a burn unit and over 30 surgeries, Moran came home to Cypress, TX, with his family.

Moran’s home construction was organized by Helping a Hero – a non-profit organization that teams with home builders to construct homes for wounded veterans at a reduced cost. Perry Homes constructed the Moran family home complete with efficient temperature controls, as he can no longer regulate his own body temperature, and tinted windows with an extended covered porch, allowing him to play outside with his children, to prevent Moran’s exposure to direct sunlight, even the plot was selected for having the least sunlight.

It was a day of joy for the family of four: Moran, his wife, Teal, and their children, Trey 4 and Macy 2; and it is the perfect home for Moran and his family to welcome their third child in six months! As Moran put it, “I could never say thank you enough for how I feel right now. What do I say to people who have given me so much? There aren’t words to justify it, so this is the way I will justify it – by the way that I live my life. I will live my life with honor, courage and commitment.” And he has. From the community of Fairfield and the greater Cy-Fair area, thank you Captain Moran!

New BBVA Compass Banking Center Open in Cypress

On September 1st, the BBVA Compass announced the opening of a new full-service banking center on the corner of Cypress Rosehill and 290. This banking center will be the 57th BBVA Compass banking center in the Houston area. It will also be the first BBVA center serving the Cypress area, an important market for BBVA Compass.

This is great news for Cypress and Cy-Fair residents, as the banking center adds convenience for BBVA Compass customers. Beverly Westhoff, North Houston district retail executive, echoed that sentiment with, "This new location allows us to be convenient for those who live near and work in the Cy-Fair area of Houston and reemphasizes BBVA Compass' commitment to offering our customers more value, resources and innovative solutions to meet their evolving financial needs."

Elsie Fong heads this Cypress branch of BBVA Compass, who holds more than nine years experience with the company. Six other staff members accompany her, and the new banking facility includes four drive-thru lanes and two ATMs.

The bank lobby hours are from 9 am to 4 pm, Monday through Thursday, 9 am to 6 pm on Friday, and 9 am to noon on Saturday.  Drive-thru hours are 7:30 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday, and 9 am to noon on Saturday. If you would like to contact the new banking center you can reach them at 713-867-2850.
