Making “Good Music Accessible to Everyone”

That is the goal of ‘Symphony North of Houston’ – a community based orchestra made up of individuals from the community and free to individuals in the community who enjoy playing and listening to classical music.

This unique ensemble is made up of teachers, lawyers, bankers, homemakers, and engineers; people just like you and me. They are professionals by day and lovers of classical music all the time.

Symphony North has been providing a venue and rehearsal opportunities for the ‘working man-musician’ since 1974 when Shirley Shultz established a steering committee to discuss the founding of an orchestra for Northwest Houston as there were no orchestras in the area high schools at that time. It has blossomed over the years and still supports budding young artists of Houston by sponsoring a yearly Young Artist Competition. The winning performers are honored by joining the orchestra in concert for a special performance during the year.

The concerts are held at 4:00pm on specified Sundays (see below)
Northwoods Presbyterian Church, 3320 FM 1960 West, Houston, TX
Admission is by donation, proceeds help continuing support of the orchestra.

A Birthday with a Twist

One Cypress pre-teen celebrated her 12th birthday this September, but not the way you might think. She didn’t ask for a long list of presents from her 35 birthday party guests. Isabel Mayne was celebrating life, but not just her own. Instead she found a way to raise money and awareness for people with A-T (Ataxia-telangiectasia), a progressive and degenerative disease with no known cure.

She wanted to give back and celebrate in a way that reached out to others in need. She hand decorated more than 40 invitations and included a request that her guests make a donation to A-T in place of a gift for Isabel. This selfless pre-teen even created a scavenger hunt in which guests had to find something for each letter of ataxia-telangiectasia.

Isabel first learned of A-t this summer on a mission trip where she had the opportunity to befriend Emily, a girl from her church that suffers from A-T. Emily is a ninth grader at Cy-Creek High School and was diagnosed with A-T at age four. Unfortunately most people with A-T die from respiratory failure or cancer by their teens or early twenties, but a rare few live into their forties. So for this birthday, Isabel was giving to those who might not have as many years as she will have on this earth, in hopes to help them as much as she can.

Isabel was able to raise $910 at her party alone, and hopes to collect $1000 before presenting the gift to the A-T Children’s project. “I would certainly do it again,” Isabel said, “It makes me feel better because I know I am helping someone else instead of doing something for myself.” Her mother is proud too, “I know she really wanted a laptop. It means a lot to see a girl at this age give up so much. I am really proud of her.”

Fairfield residents have an opportunity to take advantage of a health screening on Saturday, November 14th at Bradford Creek Clubhouse, 16011 Fairfield Green Circle.

Most screenings at offices or at the hospital can cost patients up to $2,000, but "HealthYes" is offering screenings for only $169.95 - the Total Health Screening Package (mention code BD1TX111409). This is real heart attack and stroke prevention right in your own backyard!

"The Silent Killers" are diseases like stroke, heart disease, and osteoporosis in which patients don't feel symptoms leading up to the disease or to the outcome of the disease. If not detected, these can show up suddenly and when they do it can be devastating and life threatening. While this may leave some uneasy, these "silent killers" can be detected and prevented with non-invasive and painless screenings that can save your life.

"HealthYes" mobile medical teams provide ultrasound screenings to check for six life-threatening diseases, also checking cholesterol, blood pressure and carotid arteries among other factors. These pain free procedures give back useful data that doctors can analyze to determine not just whether a patient is in the 'normal' or 'abnormal' range, but also your actual risk for these diseases.

A fundraising celebration of community and friendship is making its way to Cypress this fall. On October 14th, Reach Unlimited will be hosting its Reach for the Stars Luncheon at the Berry Center on 8877 Barker Cypress Rd. in Cypress. The luncheon will go from 12 to 1pm and is free to the public.

Reach Unlimited is a place where people with intellectual and developmental disabilities go to learn and live together. This successful not-for-profit agency supports people in all kinds of living situations ranging from those living on their own, with guardians, or in group homes within Cypress. With over 260 people enrolled at the Learning Activity Center, the center is busy with a full curriculum of lifelong learning.

Reach Unlimited has touched many lives of not only its clients, but its workers as well. "The clients at Reach motivate me to continue in a positive direction like they do, on a daily basis, despite their disabilities," said Britanni Busby, an employee at Reach Unlimited. "I now feel like I can do anything in life."

Each year Reach Unlimited must raise $1 million to cover the difference between fees paid and costs. Last year, the Reach For The Stars Luncheon raised $500,000 and had over 600 people in attendance.
