Green Medians by Kids Art Expo gives community children, ages 5-12, a chance to share how they view their community and their hopes for positive community growth, in the visual sense. The show is to help raise support and awareness of the Green Medians project which seeks to create Green Medians along FM 1960 for safety and visual beauty as the community continues to grow.
Community children are encouraged to submit their work of any medium, sized 8 ½” x 11”, to the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts or to the Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce no later than November 2. The children’s artwork will be on display at the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts on Saturday November 7, from 10am-2pm, during one of the museum’s Family Days hosted the second Saturday of each month.
Barbara Schlattman, The Green Medians Committee Chair, came up with the idea of an “Art Expo” because she thought it would be a wonderful way to get children involved and for children to share what they want their community to look like. “This is one way that we will see a significant improvement in what we consider to be our main street. Greening FM 1960 will improve property values while causing people to slow down and enjoy their surroundings.” Schlattman said.
The Green Medians is a committee of the Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce that was established to coordinate the creation and installation of Green Medians which TXDOT will construct in January 2010. As the Northwest Houston area grows the increased population means an increase in traffic and congestion. This is a welcomed problem to have as it indicates community growth, but the committee recognizes the need to plan for area safety and mobility.
In order to address these concerns the Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce met with Precinct 4, Houston Galveston Area Council, the North Houston Association and TXDOT to study and recommend improvements to the areas busiest roadway. These improvements include medians to the roadways, but the group does not want to bring in unsightly medians made of asphalt which would eventually be covered in weeds. The community has a unique opportunity to create Green Medians as other municipalities and districts have done. They believe the planted medians will help revitalize the area, entice new businesses and homeowners to relocate to the area and add scenic beauty. They also believe the medians will cause a new wave of pride in the community. There is a small time frame in which to raise money for this project and the Art Expo is one way the community can take part to help raise awareness and support for this project. If you would like to make a donation you can do so online or download a donor card and mail in your donation. All donations are tax-deductible and when designated for Green Medians, will only be used for that project.
